I have a 1981 maxim 550 in good condition, runs great, starts up quick...usually. I live in Michigan and i know I'm starting a little early in the season here but my bike died on me.

Cold day, i gave it 2 attempts with the electric start and then it went to a hum. Battery died. Happened earlier that morning as well, but i jumped it with my car and it started right up. Tried doing that again but it didn't start. it sounded like it was trying but it just wouldn't turn over. Not sure if it was just not the right day to ride and i should try again later, or if i have another issue.

I know its not a lot of info but any chit chat could be helpful. Thanks.

it's either a bad battery, or the starter brushes are worn down. how many miles are on your bike?

well the starter should be happy at that mileage (ymmv), have you had your battery tested? is it flooded cel or gel cel?

I haven't had the battery tested. I was going to just buy a new one just in case.

Did you bring your battery in for the winter or leave it in the bike? I bring mine inside and put a battery tender on it. You might want to check your connections and ground. I had intermittent starting because the glass fuses in the fuse block were corroded and not making contact.
