I've just done my valve clearances due to a ticking sound especially when cold. Replaced 6 shims and all clearances seem to be within spec now but it's still ticking. Could it be a valve seat issue? If so how difficult/costly is it to repair?

Looking at the service manual it seems like it would be a bit more involved than I really want to get

what year is your diversion ?, does it have an automatic cam chain tensioner, or a manual one ?
have you adjusted the chain tension?

how many miles on the clock has the engine done?
unlikely to be a valve seat issue, unless one "or more" of the valves was tight with no clearance, or extremely high milage
valve seat work involves removing head and either re-cutting or re-seating with new seats, quite involved

2003, automatic cam chain tensioner I think. 16000 miles on the clock
6 valves around .02mm under spec, the other 2 were okay
ticking seems to be at 1 tick per 2 rpm (at least at idle, it's harder to hear at higher revs)

check your exhaust studs are tight at the joint to the cylinder head, that can cause the ticking sound

it was the exhaust bolts! I sprayed a little WD-40 to try avoid snapping them, which inadvertently showed me which pipe was loose
1 round of tightening made it better, fired the engine up and spotted the oil smoking off the exhaust on cylinder 4, tightened that up some more and it's completely fixed
    thank you stu!
