In anticipation of future projects, I'm gathering up ideas for a do-it-yourself springer front end. Anyone ever attempt/succeed in building one? I don't think the engineering would be that difficult but I'm curious about materials and parts to use (solid vs. hollow main tubes, what types of springs, etc.).

    Thoughts?

I think that's alot of engineering work.

I'd think hollow tubes would be fine. Your forks are hollow, your frame is hollow etc.

You'll want springs small enough but of the appriopriate spring rate.

Might be easier to find an aftermarket one for a harley or something and change the neck on your frame.

I thought about building my own, but considering the materials and equipment needed plus welding equipment, shielding gases and various welding procedures for various types of metals....... I decided it would be better to buy a front end. DNA makes one that is adequate and decently priced. It will fit our XJ's with the proper bearings.

Thats a great link Zombie, thanks. I may have to consider this...
With the help of my father's experience, I am hoping to building a springer this summer.

Pilot, don't know if you caught my previous post springer Just wanted to share another option. This type of front end seems a lot less complicated..

That setup could be a lot easier. Using the original trees with longer fork tubes, pivot brackets, shocks and upper mounting bracket.
