Do non YICS motors use the same valve adjustment procedure?

    Hi Guys

I asked this question as a follow on in a thread regarding some carb questions. I figured it would be better to make it a separate post. I was looking at BigFitz52's post on the valve adjustment procedure (nicely done by the wayt), but my bike looks totally different. My bike is a 1980 Maxim and does not have the YICS motor. I guess they came out a year later. Does anyone know if these motors require the valve adjustment and if so if the procedure is the same? The heads and valve covers are certainly different.

    Thanks
    Pat

(I answered in your other thread too.) Thanks, BTW.

All of the aircooled XJs, YICS or not, are the same, valve-adjustment wise.

Once you take the cover off, your bike will look the same. The YICS motors came out for 1981 on the 550s and 750s; it took another year for it to find its way into the 650 Maxim.

The only real outward difference is the valve cover (and no YICS to block off when doing sync.) The cams and valves are the same; adjustment is the same.
