do you measure the coil resistance w/ boots on or off?

Still chasing down the plug fouling and have the mixture screws turned down to under 1 turn out... still fouling the plugs with black soot. It's GOT to be electrical. Went to check the coils first and...

So the Haynes and factory manuals both diagram the high tension side of the coil being measured at the spark plug boots.

I measured there and got freaky numbers.

I measured with the boots removed, sticking the probes directly into the spark plug wires and got the 11K that was spec. for the coil.

I measured the boots by themselves and they seem to be 5k Ohm which sounds familiar.

Do I need 0 ohm boots with these coils (I think they are OEM) or is the figure in the manuals incorrect and the boots need to be the 5K ohm

    Why can't this be easier?

If you measure WITH the boots ON from #1 to #4 plug boot you should see ~21-22K ohms (5K+5K for the boots + 11k for the coil)

Same goes for #2 to #3 boots.

5K r on the boots is fine, as long as you are not running 'R' plugs.

Sounds good so far... what do you get on the primary side?

    ...still good...

Everything you've posted looks normal. Base service manual I'm looking at for the Seca says 5K on 1 & 4, and oddly enough, 10K on 2 & 3.
