So changed the oil on the bike tonight, and as i was dumping the oil from the drain pan into the waste oil can I realized that when i took off the filter i let the washer drop into the oil pan from the spring. Andddd then obviously diddnt put it back

Can i just run without it for the next 3k miles or do i have to drain her out and put it back in there?

    Thanks!

If the spring and washer are not in there the oil will not filer properly.

If you take the filter housing off I don't think you'll need to drain the oil

The spring is in there, but lacking the washer, still gotta re-do it?

I know if i had not put the spring in there, that would be an issue, but i was thinking(and hoping) that the washer was just there to have a bigger surface area between the spring and filter?

hi, i wouldnt think it would cause any probs at all, the spring will just sit on the rubber grommet instead of the washer, it may leave a dent in the rubber after time id think. could be wrong though

I did the same thing...but it didn't seem right to me and I looked it up in the manual, thought there was an extra piece in my old XJ...sure enough, it was missing the washer. But not because I did it, apparently the P.O. had lost it...so no telling how long that had been going on.

My concern was that without pushing back far/tight enough, it might bypass and just push unfiltered oil through the assembly...so I found a washer the correct size and pulled the filter and installed that.

You aren't gonna lose much oil just removing the filter...about 1/2 pint when I re-did mine...

    It's fine.

About 80% of the original washers got thrown away on the first oil change. IIRC, the original filters had fiber rings where the new ones are rubber. The washer would stick to the filter, and into the dumpster it went.

Both of my 550s were missing the washer when I got them. One of them had the filter in backwards, with the spring on the wrong side. Silly PO.

Just reinstall the washer next time; and don't wait 3K. If this is an old bike that's recently gone back on the road, you need to be doing "short" oil changes for the first 10K or so. 1500 miles max. If you don't believe me, look at the oil that comes out.

Thanks for that clarification! I had assumed that the washer missing would not be a horrible thing, but just wanted to make sure.

Thanks for the tip on the "short" oil changes, I have no problem doing them at 1500 instead. I hear you on the oil that comes out, I put 4.5k on it since may, and have changed it once before (after around 2200k before a long trip) and both times now the oil has been pretty wicked.

But autozone had castrol 4t 20w-50 on sale for 2.99/qt. a few months back and i stocked up, so I'm good to go!
