well i was reading dot 4 was mixable and a replacement for dot 3 then i read on these xj forums the system turns to sludge if this is done i replaced the master cyinder and brake lines with braided and decided to go back to dot 3 i ended up having to reverse bleed the system so whatever dot 4 was left in mixed pretty well i did a bit of a flush the dot 3 was a clear slight yellow and dot 4 a blue .whats left is only slightly discoulored with dot 4...does this matter just a slight amount of dot 4 ..or should i keep pumping it out

I think you read a post that had some bad information in it, or where someone was confusing DOT 4 with DOT 5. 3, 4, and 5.1 are all compatable, and mixable. DOT 5 is silicone based, and will gel when mixed with glycol based brake fluid.

Unless you are racing, or riding in the mountians, there is really no need for the higher boiling point of DOT 4, but it's fine to use. The color that you see in the brake fluid is a dye, and all glycol brake fluids can come with either no dye (most common) or one of several colors of dye. The color has nothing to do with what type of brake fluid it is, but as you've found it does help you know when you have gotten all of the old fluid bled out.

Since both the DOT3 and DOT4 that is in your system is new, just button it up and go ride.

ysweet thanks i did find some mud in my system but might of been just from old stuff and happenstance that i had to replace just about everything on my front brakes ...spewing about my back brake shoe though i read that laminate coming off post and noticed a previos brake shoe had one before i replaced the whole wheel that came with brake pads they looked alright but a little on the thin side so orded some new ones once they came they diddnt have much more meat then the ones on there so i basicly wasted 70 bucks but spose better safe then sorry
