Is it recommended to change your gear oil when the bike is warm or does it matter?

    Thanks!

Dosen't matter. Warming just speeds up the draining (and finger burning) part of the process.

I know we spend hours debating the right oil for our wet clutches, but is there a type of gear oil we should be using in the rear end? I was gonna pick up one the other day, but the bottle said it was formulated for use with limited slip differentials. I know only one wheel spins when a motorcycle does a burnout, so there's no LSD back there,;) but does it make a difference in the gear oil selection?

Manual says grade 80, some ass change mine with a grade over 100 (I guess) and blew the oil retainer...

I don't know about that 90 at the end, but all the rest is exactly what manual says.

You don't need the LSD additive pack, but if you have another use for that gear oil and are buying some anyway it won't hurt to use it.

Brand doesn't matter. API rating and viscosity does.

FSM and Haynes both call for GL-4 80 or 80W/90.

The question of whether or not there are any zinc, brass, or copper plated parts in the XJ final drive has come up before. I have still not bothered to tear into one, and unless someone who has can chime in to verify, I will continue to recommend using a GL-4 oil over a GL-5 since GL-5 oil has sulfur compounds that will damage zinc, brass, and copper parts.

The Redline gear oil referenced above carries an "exceeds GL-5" designation.
