I mounted a set of Ducati hard bags today. Used the Ducati Nonfango racks, welded a couple of brackets and even wired up the factory Ducati turn signals. What prompted this you might ask? I saw an ad on Craigslist for the bags with a "make offer" price. I offered up $100 and the lady bit off. When I arrived at her house, she also had a Ducati Tank bag that she threw in! Took me the better part of the afternoon and evening to fab the mounts but it's all together now. I had to put the Seca bulbs in the Ducati turn signals to make them flash but everything works. I'll post some pics tomorrow when the light is better. Still have to paint the bags as they're the wrong color and somewhat scuffed but I'm very happy with the results.

Here's the semi-final result. I'm still debating what color to paint them. I can try to color match the angled smooth part of the tops. I'll probably just go with a semi-gloss black right now though. That seems to be the piece that's body color. The rest of the bags are just textured plastic and I picked up some rejuvenator for that. Just some auto trim restorer that should work fine. I'm stoked about how well they turned out. The top box is a Shad scooter trunk mounted to the existing rack. I think I have quite the sport-tourer now. [IMG]

Got to agree with mlew, the lines work really well with your bike, you definitely scored big time with those. Leave the Ducati stickers on the cases, should mess people up when they look at the bike!

Nice look to say the least. I personally see those hard cases as a big improvement. Nice to see a change that really looks great to say the least.

Loook real great and as if original to the bike. Nice piece of work. I have been thinking of prepping up one of my XJ as a tourer ....whenever I get around to doing some work and completing them and that is a perfect example of what I have been thinking of.

Yes I would be match painting the sooth part (lid) of the hard bag to suit the rest of the bike

Wow, thanks for the encouraging words. As I took another look at these pics they were a little lopsided and I've since straightened out. I'm searching for some color matched paint, or something close enough. I do want to match the smooth part to the bike, I think it would make them look like they really belonged there.
I'll post pics when I'm all finished.

This is my tourer and obviously not a Yamaha....but to illustrate what the lid would look like Color coded to the bike. The panniers do not show up that much, but contrast on the the Top box gives a good idea of what yours may look like if you went down that path.

I never even took that into consideration but it was a welcome bonus. Very happy so far, going to look for some matching paint today. If anyone knows of a rattle-can that matches the Yamaha red from 1981, please let me know!

The grey doesn't look bad, I put some turtle-wax bumper restorer on the bottom part, the bare plastic, and hit the grey with some rubbing compound. Got rid of the scuffs and really cleaned them up. I'm satisfied for now how they look, someday when I find the exact paint color I'll probably paint the tops of the saddlebags, along with the top insert of my trunk. I guess this is the final product for now!

Don't rattle can it....it will spoil all the good work you have done so far.
Got a bargain on the hard cases. ...My advice is wait for a bit if you have to and get it matched up to the bike. Seriously it will look a million dollars and compliment your bike. The old saying....if it is worth doing...doing it well!!!

Took a ride tonight, they are solid and didn't affect the balance at all. They weren't loaded down but they didn't rattle, didn't move and I didn't feel them at all. All in all I'm very happy with the install.

I couldn't help it, I had to paint them!

I think they turned out nice. Every coat of wax I put on makes them that much more glossy. They match the paint well.

Maybe Len has a set of badges that would match the one on your tank and put them on the side near the front corners, kinda like this, but a little more forward. Pardon the crappy paint skills.
