I been thinking how nice it would be to ballence and tune two double barrel carbs comming out each side of my xj 550, I would assume it would be much like going from a single carb on a VW to a duel carb set up, but I havent seen any kits out and about for a set up like I'm thinking. Hell I'm sure I can make the barrels if there isn't a nice kit available, but what I really need to know is what can I replace the inline 4 carbs with? My bike is a 1981 XJ550H Maxim, I can't remember if i have the hitatchi or makuni carbs though, but if any one has some knoweldge they would like to share it would be appreciated.

I'm still waiting for the member to get the fuel injection down to a kit form so I can throw all my carbs in the aluminum recycle bin. Or better yet sell them on ebay so someone else can spend hours and hours cleaning and adjusting.

Your bike has Mikuni's on there, and if you put enough/money you could do it. People have gone over to fuel injection, and I think some one has tried a 1-4 manifold with a throttle body style fuel delivery system.

But your never going to find a kit, they basically don't make and 'kits' for these bikes that aren't stock.

It's been done on 750 Hondas. Infact there is a web site that actually sells the dual carb setup for 750 Hondas that involves two larger single carbs mounted on 2-into-1 intakes. I'd like to see that kind of set up on mine. I'm sure it can be done. I don't know just how much it would effect the performance however. I'm assuming it would not have the same power band it does now.

PainterD if you can remember the website that would be awsome, I'll see what I can google up. Also Ace, thanks for tip-off on fuel injection, never thought of doing that, I'll have to look into that too while researching.
    Thanks again.

here is an interesting thought...a DHLA 40 or DHLA 45 Dellorto Side Draft Carb (i wish i could remember off the top of my head the port size for the intake) i have a pair of 48's that i run on my Rotary Truck. it would require some modest modifications but i assure you you wont find a better carb.
