I need to get the XJ CD set and will soon... I have no manual whatsoever for the 82 XJ650 I'm working on for a friend or the 85 700 Maxim I'm getting for myself next week.

My question is what weight/grade of oil does the 650 need and what is the capacity?

If the crankcase was overfilled by the owner does that cause some oil to leak from any vent tubes or anything? This one seems to leak some from the left side near the back of the tranny a little when it's running.

I want to change the oil and make sure the level is right, then see where I'm at.

    Thanks!

Oil weight is usually a preference based on your riding style and climate. A good 10/40 in Ohio should work well. The oil leak at the left side backof the tranny is probably the oring on the starter motor. Remove the starter and see if the oil is coming from there. The oring is usually available at an auto parts store with a selection of orings.

    Thanks for the help!

Is a "motorcycle oil" necessary or is a good SJ type automotive oil ok? Also what's the capacity? I know there's a sight glass on the right side of the case. Where in that window should the level be?

    Thanks again!

Synthetics are good oils for bikes but they have to be motorcycle specific. The auto synthetics have friction modifiers that can cause clutch slippage. Don't know the amount right off the top of my head but it is stamped on the engine case just behind the oil filler cap. Should be either 2500ccm or 2300ccm.

I guess I should have said about halfway to 3/4 up the window is good. Below halfway is low, All this of course with the bike on the centerstand.
