If you all remember about a month ago I had a question on no spark every now and then on my 1983 yamaha maxim. It was recommended to change out my fuse panel. I did that and everything seemed to be fine. Well we got some rain and damp weather here, now it will not start again. It is not getting any spark, plenty of gas though. I can hold the start button in turn it over, turn the key off and it sounds like it wants to start but does not. I don't know if it is the electronic ignition module, or maybe the switch anybody for advice I would appreciate it thank you.

Use a spare Spark Plug and plug it into the No.-4 Cap and ground it to the Engine.

    See if you have spark?

    Let us know.

when it acts up no I don't have spark I just went outside and it actually started, but it only ran for about a minute and a half. Know it will not re fire. It is a funny thing I will go out in about another 30-40 minutes and it will probably start, and be fine for awhile or a week you never know I do not understand. I am new the xj bikes and have never seen this before.

sorry I just checked the spark again I could not see spark clearly, But I turn the key on you can see a little spark. when you turn it over i could not really tell. I have no idea about all of this. Remember it only does this when it is rainy and or damp weather.

You might just have a moisture-grounding problem. Dry-out the areas surrounding those spark plugs and see if she'll fire-up. Then, if it does, you can get an ignition spray and do the wires and where the plugs fit.

There's never a guarantee that it won't happen whenever the bike gets wet.
But, a little bit of ignition spray goes a long way to preventing it from happening again.

I have the same problem if I leave my bike outside. Gets covered in dew, will turn over, nothing. I am going to try the ignition spray, but I am also going to silicone spray some of the insides of the switches, and some of the connectors, and battery terminals. That might help also, certainly couldnt hurt to have it "more" water proof.

I know what the problem is with my bike though... She's just picky, doesnt like to be left outside. Petty soon I'll have to give her a blanket and a pillow... Scared to think of what might happen if I put the cheap gas in her!

They don't like to be left outdoors in a situation where condensation will form on the bike and cause the whole bike to become one big ground.

I've added a few extra pieces of insulation to fend off shorting out the ignition.

I slit some clear vinyl hose and slipped 3-inch sections over the Plug wires where they criss-cross under the tank. I have no idea if that has anything to do with how well I have been starting now that the evening chill will give my but a wet-willey when I go out to put the bike in the garage for the night.

In the deep recesses of my Anal-retentive -- "Keep-it-stock" mind ... I chalk-up this extra added attraction as necessary for "High Performance"

The bike "SEEMS" to start better. Although its a One-Touch Starter, anyway.
SEEMS to run better. But, that's probably just me lying to myself for doing something that's probably not necessary and feeling good about not being able to see the vinyl added to the braids coming away from those coils!
