Just wanted to post my electrolysis pics in case anyone else wanted to try this method for cleaning their tank. All that is required is 1 Tablespoon of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (ace hardware) per gallon of water a battery charger and a couple of days time. Mix the solution and fill up the tank. Attach the positive lead from the battery charger to the sacrificial anode and the negative should be grounded to the tank, I used one of the petcock screws (the polarity is important to get straight or you will use electrolysis to bond the rust to your tank). I set my battery charger to 12V 10amp charge and let it go a couple of days, cleaning the anode about twice per day. This process works and as long as you make sure the anode does not touch the inside of the tank anywhere (you can put a cork on the end of the anode or electrical tape) it is a very gentle cleaning process. By the way the rubber stopper I used is a number 9 1/2 also purchased at Ace. Fits perfectly in the filler opening and keeps the anode securely in place.

wow you noticed. Yes my original '82 xj650 is RED. However I wanted the extra gallon so....I bought an '83 xj750 tank off of ebay for $85 in pretty good shape, very little rust which was my primary concern. The nice thing about the 1983 750 tank is that it doesn't have a fuel sender port to block off. Then I bought the original 1982 xj650 black-blue paint from Len ($120) and brought it to my local autobody shop. He removed the dents, blasted it, primed it, painted it, and clear coated it for $150 which I was extremely pleased with. So with a new set of black side covers (you don't want to know how much those were) I am black to red and back again in 5 minutes :) Here is the black version, same bike.

Great idea, can't wait to use it on my tank.

Yes crash bars! I wish I could afford them.
Cases can be hard to find and not cheap.
