I've read dozens of posts about switching out to LEDs and requiring the electronic flasher relay (or adding resistors, etc). I have decided the easiest route would be to switch out the relay.

I purchased a cheap 3-prong electronic flasher, but can't figure out where to put it. I located what I had 'thought' was the old mechanical flasher, but there's 9 prongs coming out of it, not 3 as I was expecting.

Am I looking at the wrong thing? It was under the tank, between the frame rails. It's a black box, and like I said has 9 prongs, not 3. It is labelled '41R-71' , which according to the Yamaha parts catalog, is a 'FLASHER RELAY ASSEMBLY'.

My bike is a 1985 XJ700 Air cooled bike.

I'm getting pretty frustrated, and any help, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think there is a simple plug'n'play replacement relay, it's never that simple.

This How-To works for some if you are lucky enough to find the right parts.

Check that post, its explains how the relay and all its features work. Then explains how to replace the relay and make it work correctly.

XJ700 models used a integrated flasher relay/sidestand safety relay assembly....that's the big black box with the 9 terminals. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to solve the "LED problem" on 700's besides using load resistors that mimic the standard voltage draw (even though you are using low-current LED's, which, of course, kind of defeats the purpose of using LED's......).

    hmmmm.... darn...

well, I'm going to go and try to cut the 'brown' and 'brown/white' leads going into the box, which from what I understand are the 12v input and output for the flashers... and I'm going to try to run those through an electronic flasher, along side the original... leaving everything else hooked up.

worst case scenario I figure is that I blow a fuse, or it don't work, and I just put it back the way I found it...

thanks for the input guys, I appreciate the feedback.

Thanks again for the info and advice guys, but I've given in and ordered some resistors on ebay... I know it kinda defeats the purpose of LEDs, but I got 'em, and so I'm gunna use 'em...

Now I just got to solder the wires back together that I snipped in trying to use both relays side by side... ughhh...

It is pretty much plug and play buddy. I'd come help you if I was still in NL, but just check out the info in my sig (pg 8).

    Hey Ease,

I wish it was pretty much plug and play... the flasher relay on the '85 and '86 XJ700 is different. Same one as one similar year Viragos and FJs (and who knows what else)

It's has 9 pins instead of 3. It integrates the flasher relay, side stand relay, and safety relay all into one unit.

Nice Cafe build by the way...
