I've owned my 83 Xj550 Maxim since it was new. It hasnt been running well in the last 10 years due to cummulative neglect.

Since I only ran it several hundred miles each summer (just to keep it running), this spring I asked my wife if I should sell it. She said no as I had bought it for a wedding gift for us to ride together. She said I could spend some money to get it running better.

Thanks to this site I've done various maintenance items through the summer, each one made it run better. Up until last weekend it had a minor but lingering misfire which I thought was carbeurator. Last weekend I discovered it was spark plug caps. New caps and holy moly, its running like a champ. I can't get off it this weekend!

Alas, supposed to get colder thus week. Perhaps another weekend or so and I will have to prepare it for storage. Sigh, just when it really got special to ride!

    I have warm gear, but 20 below F is 20 below!!! o_O

Hopefully I'll get another week to a month before it gets snow and ice cold.

I'm enjoying the ride to work more now than in August. Mid 40's in the AM and low 60's at lunch (I go ride the metroparks if I can get out and take in the color changes) and going home. Beats sweating waiting for traffic to move.

I feel your pain, cgutz. Tomorrow is my last day of riding. Insurance will be cancelled afterwards and while heated gear sounds awesome, so does paying the bills. Perhaps over time though. Good to hear you have it running well. You'll be ready for the Spring.

Oh, and Georgia is coming eventually. I still have a few years before I retire and move South, leaving all the crap of the North here.

You are sooooo lucky. In Ontario, you must buy motorbike insurance in 12 month blocks. The companies weren't making enough money with our 3-4 month riding season!

This summer I was in Alberta. A guy at the hotel had a 1980 era Kawasaki. He mentioned his vintage plate registration and insurance were something like $400 and felt pretty good about that.
I didn't have the heart to tell him my license registration is only about $12/year, and my M/C insurance policy is around $60. But then, I live in what is supposed to be the least regulated state in the USA.

    Matt,

Insurance for me is only $75 a year. I'll probably just leave it on next year.

the guy who lives up the street from me in his rain gear tooling towards me on his black 50cc scooter rolled down my window gave him a big thumbs up.

Winter storm warning for tomorrow. 5-8 inches of snow predicted. Stored my Maxim and prepped snowblower.

    Sigh....

Don't think I will be taking the Maxim out today, even if it wasn't in hibernation. winter 2015.jpg

Man, that's what you need a snow bike for.
I am riding more now that I am not melting in traffic (though I am riding my 390 Duke almost exclusively).

Back in the day we would use hex headed sheet metal screws . That guy had to rides at the back of the pack to avoid hitting others with screws leaving the tire at a hi rate of speed.
