I need some advise. Every time I take the 1981 xj650 for a ride the engine cuts out at around 1-2 miles I found if I flip the ignition switch to off and then on the engine kicks in and is good for the rest of the day. This has been happening since I bought the bike 2 years ago. I have tried everything I just recently bought a brand new ignition switch and it still does it. Its not fuel and I don't think it is the TCI all though I could be wrong. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I hate riding down US1 and having the engine cutout with traffic behind me 8O

thats strange, might be a relay getting goofy, some of them can be pried open and sprayed out with some LPS, don't use WD40

You can also look at your TCI for cracks in the solder runs (this is not uncommon for your year and model). Reflow any that look even slightly suspect. Be sure to observe good anti-electrostatic practices and ground yourself and the TCI as you open it.
