    Hi

I have a 89 fj600 and dropped the engine from the bike as it was seized.
I have an older empty 85 fj 600 crankcase and was planning to separate my seized engine and use the con rods pistons crank etc and place them in the older 85 crankcase as its in a much superior condition cosmetically. However I've noticed the obvious that the older 85 engine uses the pulse plate pick up ignition system and the later model has the flywheel and timing plate bolted to the left hand side end of the crankshaft. Put simply what would i have to do to modify the loom on my 89 fj to get it to work i.e would I need a different regulator rectifier, or any other electrical mods?I gather i couldn't use my newer crankshaft either so would require and earlier model crank shaft too?

exactly what parts do you have on each engine?
if you're planning on using the "seized" pistons, you should verify they are usable.
electrical wise, the rectifier should be the same, the three white wires from the alternator would reroute to the earlier position above the sprocket cover. same with the pickup wires
why not transfer the later model crank and all the electrics, assuming its not the crank that's siezed

    Hi

yes it's an 89 per diversion 600 engine part of the lower crank case is snapped so wouldn't keep compression anyway planned on stripping it and placing the parts in a 85 xj600 pre diversion empty crankcase that I have, except i don't think you could use the crankshaft like you said if it's seized also i couldn't mount the 89 alternator to the 89 crank again and use it in the older crankcase as there's no place on the earlier engine to align the t mark on the rotor as the cases on both engines on the left hand side are completely different.

Posted a pic below of the two differences in the engine if it makes any sense. Top is the 85 crankcase with the hole for the end of the crankshaft which the pick up plate sits on and screw holes for the rotor to align the timing to the plate. Bottom is a pic of the later 89 engine timing plate IMG_20180428_221604.jpg IMG_20180428_221644.jpg that has dowels and holes so it's fixed to the side of the case so you can align the t mark on the alternator.

    Cheers
