I'm in the process of splitting the motor to fix that pesky 2nd gear problem. Are there any recommendations about cleaning the parts that are removed, how and what to use, or just wipe them down with a rag and get as much oil off them as possible? Didn't know if I should use brake cleaner, or simple green or something along those lines. Figured I'd ask the experts.

I find carb cleaner works well if you haven't a parts washer, just remember to rinse and dry them afterwards

NOTHING works better than LOW ODOR Mineral Spirits. Get a gallon of Sunnyside brand for under $7 at the hardware store. Get a cheap parts brush or old paint/tooth brush too...

Good advice; I use mineral spirits a lot.

One note on reassembly: There are some very specific places in the motor that HAVE to have an application of Yamabond #4 (or equivalent) or you could be taking a chance with oil pressure in the bottom end. There are also some very specific guidelines on the application, as in where not to put it as well.

Get a service manual if you aren't using one now.
