My bro is going to sell me his 92 Yamaha XJ600 Seca II. It's a good starter bike, but I know after this summer I'll prob want something with a little more power. I've been looking at different Forums on swaping motors in the XJ600 and want to know other peoples honest opinons on the matter. Several of the forums I've seen are talking about swaping with a Honda motor or some other companies motor. During the process of looking up replacement parts for some things that need changed on the current bike I ran across Yamaha FZ1 bikes. To me the FZ1 looks like a more modern version of the XJ600. So my question is would it be more cost effective to buy a new bike for next year or if I could get someone to help with moving around mounts and brackets, swap out the old 600 motor for a newer 1000 off a FZ1?

More cost effective to put in a different motor.....could be. Astronomical amount of work? Yes.

You'd pretty much have to swap a whole FZ1 over to the XJ frame. The XJ600 gauges will most likely not be compatible with the FZ1 electrical system. Another issue to consider is if the rear sprocket from the XJ will line up with the FZ1 front sprocket. These are a few examples.

If you want to make a project out of it, then you'll get lots of support. But honestly, I'd just save those pennies and get a well-used but taken care of FZ1.

The most common parts that are swapped with the XJ600 Seca II are from the FZR600. Almost everything is the same except for the engine and frame, which has about 30 more horses. All other parts are pretty much swappable. That would be something to look into.

Looked up a couple other forums and they say an engine swap from 2nd or 3rd gen seca can be done with just moving mounts and running to electrical, but can only be done with 1st gen FZ1. So I may just end up getting a new bike for next year or make a project out of it over the winter and try and tackle the motor swap. I think they say 1st gen cuz it's still a carburated engine after that they started doing injectors and if I swaped for 1 of those motors I may as well get a new bike cuz I'd just be building 1 anyway.
