Engines out... Now what.

    I am in the process of rebuilding my bike, at this stage I have the engine out and the frame, swingarm and various other pieces are away with a friend getting bead blasted and ready for powdercoating.

    The engine is out, it has done 65,000Km's (Roughly 40,000 Miles) and I was wanting to get an idea on what I should be doing to it or checking while I can access it easily and without spending unnecessary money on it.

    Ideally I would like to strip the engine completely and get the castings blasted and repainted as well but not sure how deep into the motor I want to go to find out how much more I will need to spend on it :p

    Checking clearances is already on my list.

    Id just leave it at checking and maybe adjusting the clearances.
    You've heard of that old saying " if it ain't f***ed , don't fix it". :idea:

    when i was in the position, i was thinking of rebuilding the starter clutch, you know, breaking the case apart, replacing everything inside that could go bad. but i was talked out of it. in reality, it's really not a huge deal to pull the motor. you and a buddy can do it any time in the matter of a half an hour, if that. other than valve shims i'de say cam chain tensioner, valve gasket, and donuts. but thats nothing you can't do with the engine in, just easier

    Did the engine have any problems running before you started the project? At least check the valves while its out of the frame.

    Point taken :) I normally think along those lines "If it aint broken don't fix it" but I also think along the lines of what can I do to prevent it from breaking in the first place :p

    The only real "Issue" I was having was when starting the bike (Normally on cold mornings) i would hear a squealing / slipping sound which I was really hoping was not the starter clutch and am guessing its the starter motor which I may look deeper into. However I only had the bike for a month before hand and did not really have it out much in that time.

    As for removing the engine, well... I thought I would try do it myself LOL I can defiantly say next time (and putting it back in) I will be getting some assistance. It was by far not a fun task on my own.

    Will defiantly be checking the valve clearances, thought I should also check the clutch plates as the clutch wasn't the best (May just need proper adjusting).

    While you have it out....you may want to take a look at the primary chain guide. Just inspect it. They are known to break up.......look how many issues of that we've just seen. If you inspect it and it's good, cool. But you'd be foolishto not inspect it, put the engine back in only to have it crumble shortly there after................
