Exchange wheel, bike to bike

    Hi Guys,
    Just before I try this out, thought I would share on the forum and get some ideas on if this is a good waste of time, or bad.

    I got an X900RL with bald front and back tyres. Its my current daily ride.

    And then I have an XJ900RN that is undergoing a transformation and rebuild, but has what appear to be brand new tires on it

    These 2 bikes are 1 year apart in age.

    I am "hoping to assume" that the wheels would be the same between these 2 models.
    Meaning that I could simply swap out the entire wheels front and back RN to RL

    I would off course check the wheel balancing in the process.
    I plan on changing out the the front brake lines and replace front shoes on the RL, so a complete bleed of the front braking system. (Contemplating also ditching the already disconnected antidive, and fabricate a pair of aluminium plate to cover the holes. Should make the bleed after a full drain easier).
    Rear pads were recently changed but a bleed of the system would not be a waste of time.
    This should rectify any problems arising from misalignment of pads to discs in a wheel transplant.
    At the same time a quick check of bearing conditions will happening.

    But apart from all this, do any of you see a technical issue in this sort of surgery?

    I really doubt there's any differences between them. The whole point of mass production is the use of standardised parts, with minimal to no fettling or matching needed, except where absolutely necessary, like in shimming drive gears, cranks etc, where it really counts.
    Wheels of two consecutive years of essentially the same model bike - nah. They'll fit, no worries. If re-using the brake pads let the pads get used to the new discs for a couple of hundred miles.

    ^^^+1 One thing to check see if tire has a date stamp ...if more than 5 yrs old you might want to just get new tires ...check sidewall for cracking to.

    Rear wheel spline sizes and axle sizes are the same on all shaft driven Yamahas (excepting mopeds and scooters). The only issue you'll ever run into is wheel width and brake plate size, and then only when swapping form different models. Stay in the same model range and you'll not have any problems.
