I would like some advice from those that have delt with this before. Ive been slowly bring back what used to be my fathers '81 650 Maxim. Overall its been pretty good to me, nothing major has broken (outside of my impatiance) but then I get the Exhaust off and discover these:

The mufflers need to be replaced anyway. They were universal megaphones that rusted through the underside. So my question here is:

Should I have this otherwise solid collector repaired and get a new set of mufflers or should I just go for the the 4-2 MAC turnouts that ive been considering?

Also if anyone can point me towards a decent set of new rider friendly replacement tires for this I would appreciate that too. Trying not to break the bank but I learned my lesson about cheap tires on my first car.

If you are good with a welder then try to fix them, thats the cheap way out. The time you will spend repairing them I would consider replacing the whole system. A new one will definetly look better.
I have tried many tires on my bikes over the years. Every name brand tire preforms well, I have been sticking with Dunlop for price and preformance. I just don't like the Chinese made tires, they don't last .

You could look into pricing the Dunlops or Kenda Challengers. There are many of us on this forum are running them.

My OEM exhaust was rusted through at the base of the mufflers, and the pipes had a very prominent coating of rust on all four headers. I decided I wanted to just replace them, and I went with the 4-into-2 MAC system with the tapered ends. I know they also offer it with the pipes pointed out to the sides, but I personally like the tapered ones better. Yeah they are a bit pricey but I know now that I have a set of pipes that will last me many years to come.

One quick note, the MAC systems do not use the OEM exhaust mounts. The exhaust headers have chrome plated panels that do fit the OEM bolts, so they are compatible - you just lose that original look.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll likely go with the MAC 4-2 although I havn't decided between the tapers or the turnouts yet. Only about a $40 or so difference either way depending on where I order from.

For tires im looking at a set of Kenda Challenger K657's through J&P Cycles for $150 including shipping which I dont think is too bad.
