will the header pipes only (off the engine) from an '82 XJ650LJ fit a stock '82 XJ650J? Or do you have to swap the entire header/collector/mufflers?

They should fit. I have both bikes and as far as I can tell the only difference is in the collector. The LJ funnels into the turbo while the RJ (stock) splits into two mufflers. Either way, the header pipes are the same in my opinion.

I looked up the header part numbers for the XJ650LJ and used the x-ref on the XJCD.

    They only fit the 1982 XJ650LJ, the 1983 XJ650LK, and the 1983 XS650LK

Hey Fraps, thanks for the info. Do the LJ header pipes go as far back (under the bike) as the standard 650 pipes? From pictures (which is all I have to go by), it seems that they are shorter by a few inches?

Also, as long as you're comparing things for me (thanks!), what about the relative mounting position of the muffler-to-frame mounting location between the two? In other words, if I put the turbo muffler sections on the standard XJ, is the position of the turbo muffler's mounting flange going to result in the muffler being shoved forward or back on the bike (due to the location of the mounting flange?).

Also, I assume that the diameter of the header pipes is the same between the two bikes?

Finally, assuming the header pipe length, diameter, and orientation coming off the heads is the same as the standard bike, I assume that these pipes will bolt right into the standard 650 collector assembly?

I am ASSUMING that it's important to keep the 650 collector assembly intact with the crossover pipe when swapping exhaust systems in order to prevent having to re-jet the carbs, etc. I don'tmind doing a little bit of custom work but I don't want to have to re-invent the wheel from scratch. Since you have both bikes sitting there in front of you, your help is much needed and VERY appreciated!

If you have any other thoughts or issues that I should be considering, please let me know.

    Thanks!

Hey chacal - I'm going to defer to Nick and the XJCD. I haven't actually swapped the headers. I figured you could since they look exactly the same but it would appear they are different.

Does the difference matter? I'll check. I have the headers off my turbo now so I'll just hold them up to the headers on my RJ and see what the difference is. You may still get away with using them.

    I'll let you know.

Hey Fraps, thanks again. Actual hands-on inspection will be the only way to do this......I know that they carry different part numbers, but that doesn't mean that they won't FIT.....part number difference could just be due to the color (black vs. chrome), etc. Let me know what you find.......thanks!
