I have an '85 XJ700 Maxim and its just alittle too quiet for my taste and wondering if there is any way to make it louder without having to mess with the carbs or what not. I have already taken a long bit and drilled a hole down through the baffle which did make a small difference but not much so just wondering if anyone had any ideas.

    The main issue is this:

These Bikes were not Engineered to BE loud.
They are Engineered to be as quiet as the Stock Exhaust Systems provide.

The Exhaust System is integrated to the Tuning of the Engine.
Alterations to part of the System will have an adverse impact on the entire system as-a-whole!

    Yamaha doesn't make Loud Exhausts.
Loud Exhausts are an earmark to a domestic manufacturer of V-Twin's.

You can't make a Yamaha sound like a Harley!
You can, however, make a Yamaha RUN as bad as a Harley!

hahaha it would seem that in attempt for the previous you end up with the latter.

I'm not wanting it to be as loud as a Harley cause I think that is actually too loud I just want it to be alittle louder than it is but oh well I guess I'll just have to leave it as it is.

I have some jardine slip-ons, sounds like a sport bike now though.
Maybe I need to throw the slash-cut straight pipes back on :)
Those are truely loud, can't even hear myself think. Performance is not as great either, but a nice treat for the Republic of Texas, and Lone Star Rallies :D

There are several after market mufflers that will slip right onto the bike with no problem. I have a pair of shorties on mine with baffles I made. I got them used and one of the baffles was almost completely gone, so I made my own.
I tried 3 diferent pairs of mufflers before I decided to go with the little shorties. I like the sound they give. They have a nice low rumble without being loud and obnoctious so as not to wake the neighbors!
I did re-synch the carbs and backed out the mixture screws a bit, but I did not have to re-jet the carbs.
My suggestion if you want to go a little louder is to take off the mufflers, measure the pipe ends where the mufflers mount to. Then go to Ebay and punch in "mufflers" in motorcycle accessories and you see tons of mufflers for very cheap prices (alot of stock Harley mufflers) Lots of them are brand spankin' new! PD

i actually thought about doing that but i'm not exactly mechanically inclined so i was trying to avoid re-syncing the carbs or anything else but if its not to hard to do i'm sure i could get some help doing it on here.
