Upon cleaning my '81 maxim exhaust I found that there are 8 holes drilled into the exit plate. 4 of the holes look manufactured, but 4 others look manually drilled into the plate. How many should be there, if any.

By exit plate would you be referring to the exit baffle plate on the exhaust muffler? There are 4 holes that are used to rivet the plate in place. Could be that the additional holes are there to speed up production by simplifying the assembly line having to hunt for the holes. Just a thought. Pictures?

I placed some duct tape over all the small holes and it became quieter, I was just wondering if someone might have drilled these holes to make it louder and have more of a rumble.

On my 81 xj650h maxim, I don't have any holes in the exit metal. And looking at your picture, to me it looks like all the holes were drilled by someone who wanted more noise. Being that exaust systems are finely balanced components, i'm surprised that this was done (although I don't really what effect it has on your bike, performance-wise, if any)

Someone drilled holes! Typically there would be 4 rivet heads apparent. Yo, your correct on the balance issue, why monkey with it? My suggestion Juice is to get some rivets or stainless steel screws of appropriate size and fill in those holes.

I was at a local used bike dealer and saw the same type of thing done to a honda magna, I asked the owner of the shop about the holes, and like you thought he said the guy that traded it in had done it to make the exhaust have a (he said better) different sound. According to him it doesnt effect the performance of bike, but I would dont know if I buy that, s'pose if you jetted the carb like you had a aftermarket exhaust it might be fine?? thought id pass along the info I was told.

i asked a well respected motor cycle mecanic in my local area about changing the exaust or doing somting of the sort he said as long as my bike is jetted up camed up (cam reworkd) straight pipe 4 into 1 wouldent be a bad idea as long as ther is no flat spot he said a flat spot is the quickest way to find out you changed somting you shouldent of but i would hate to run a 4 into 1 because i like the looks of 2 pipes any one ever taken out the baffels on the stock muffelers

I don't think mine has removeable baffles, just the one hole in the center, about 1 inch in diameter. And I don't see anything in there to take out.
I'm almost sure they are the originals, at least they have yamaha part#'s on them.
And I don't see the rivets that Robert spoke of either.
