That thin-walled, rusty, piece of tubing ... above the long, Fork Spring and below the End Cap is the Factory Pre-load.

Measure the length of that Pre-Load. Fabricate a more sturdy Pre-Load using solid dowel, solid plastic rod (shower / closet rod) or PVC Pipe.

To Performance tune your Front End for an slight increase in stability for those occasions when the guy next to you wants to see who can get to the next light first ... add 2.0 - to - 2.5 cm of additional Pre-load over the Factory set-up.

You'll like the additional stability in the turns ... and you won't KNEEL as much when you get on the front brakes.

Your building a bike bro ...
Keep us advised like you are doing.
    Nice work; ridz ...
    We got your back.

Hey Ridz, Are you replacing your springs as well? When I did mine I installed some Progressive springs, a lot better now.

no I think I might do a little budgeting in that area. Rick has aroused my suspicions on the preload technique. my spring still has a good measurement reading on it..not like im going to enjoy trying to jam them down and safely stick the aluminum threaded caps on it by even 2.5cm more. so thats it . ridz safe. ridz 8)

IF.. you want to increase the spring rate .. Distinctly.. different from increasing the Preload.Just saw a couple or more winds off yr existing springs.
Yup Poor man's "new and Improved ..performance' springs :)
You will need to increase the spacer tube lengththough Instructions above are good.. but yoou won't have to fight to tryand squeeze the spring into submission. Remember to err on the side of Caution Better to cut the spring twice than take too much off in eagerness. G'luck.

Just got the first fork back together and when I compress it by hand I get a squeaking spring sound. Is this normal Or do I need to open em back up again?

    Cheers

I don't recall hearing any spring squeek in my tubes. Got the oil in there yet?

The Factory Book wants the Spring placed to that the GREATER Pitches in the Spring are at the BOTTOM.

(Here comes some more lively discussion)

One of the pieces of paper I got with the progressive springs says that it does not matter which way around you put them :)
