Anybody replace stock horns on a 82 xj750 with some of these extra loud horns, such as " motohorns"? I'm curious if you have, did you have any problems with the current draw(10A) affecting anything.I read that our bikes regularly use 13-15 a out of 19 a.I don't see a momentary blast of honking causing any harm.Curious what you think about this or any experiences. thanks.

I wired one onto a different bike. Use a relay so the larger power draw isn't going through the switch and it will work fine. Reputable brands have wiring harnesses with relays available.

I find the extra noise from BMW horns is quite good at alerting the peasants.
    With a relay, of course.

Although many aftermarket "loud" horns are rated at 5 to 6A draw, if you put them on a scope you'll find that although the AVERAGE draw is (let's say) 5A over a period of time (for instance, 2 seconds), there are actually huge fluctuations in amperage over that 2 seconds of operation....which is why when you use a (proper) horn relay harness .... which Yamaha did not use on these older bikes .... you typically find a 30A or 40A relay. It's not like 5A or 10A or 15A (etc.) relays aren't available......it's just that small relays like that will burn up rather quickly. Yamaha (and others) used very high-quality (Nikko) horns but they're only rated at 2 -2.5A.....and part of the "high-quality" is that their range of amp draw is much more restricted than the "loud" aftermarket horns. The tiny (18 guage) wiring that is used in the stock system and the goofy little pushbutton switch and grounding method is also an impediment to current flow. And that's why stock horns are so weak.

Blow a car horn and compare the difference.....those are also 12V, and are probably 4 - 5A draw, and are almost always relay-controlled.

If you can find room, love those little air horns, have them on most of my bikes. Yes I have them set up with a 30 amp relay and they are loud! Love them things. There are lots of other standard horns that are loud as well. I just refreshed a 2002 Gold Wing and them horns a loud as well.

Good luck on finding the setup you like. Loud horns save lives....lol
