fairing on 650 maxim?

    i know some of you have installed fairings on your 650 maxims, what are your opinions of them? best rated brand? price? place of purchase? etc... and if you've got some pics, that would be awesome if you would post 'em up here! im debating the idea nowadays... thanks!

    tigerextra, I have a Windjammer and it's great, especially in the buggy season and the wet. It's tough to work on the horns, but other than that, I appreciate the storage and protection from stones and other trash thrown up by vehicles. Need to paint it as the PO put a brown fairing on a red bike, but otherwise, top notch.

    I like a windshield on my bike so that I can ride with an open face helmet.
    The rifle fairing that chacal shows is very nice but expensive. I have been using a universal large winshield that I got for $150.

    I'd go with the windjammer, I have a complete vetter set on my 750, all I can say is on them cold/chilly mornings, it is nice.

    I have a Windjammer IV on my 82 650 and love it. If you ride in the chilly air it's worth the cost and the effort. I paid $45 plus $35 shipping for mine in very good shape. The mounting brackets for the XJs are hard to find but if your handy you should be able to make what ever you can get work.
    I have'nt seen an improvement in gas milage like some but I haven't seen a decrease either.

    The problem with handle bar windshields is highspeed wobbles in a cross wind. I know this is rare but it's happened to me 6 times, once on three seperate bikes. It came to tank slapping the last it happened on my XJ 650 at 75 MPH. I never want to relive that event. Since installing the vetter fairing I've had no more bad behaviors.

    They are all over the place on Ebay and from what I've seen lately, now is the time to get them. They become expensive once riding time starts

    Hey guys, don't forget that the Rifle fairing that I have is USED, and is for sale for $ 150.00 plus shipping.........includes a shorty windshield, too.

    I am installing a vetter fairing on my 83 XJ650 right now. Everything is going smoothly EXCEPT the top bracket (the triangular one. How in the world does that get positioned? I've tried what the instructions say, but there's either:
    1. no support to keep it from swinging back out the front
    2. if it's behind the frame, I can't remount the horn
    3. if it's moved up higher it's too high and the holes don't line up
    4. if I turn it around, it doesn't change anything
    5. I re-routed the wires through the fairing mount and that didn't help
    6. ready to start all over again, but still have the problem of the top mount not working the way the diagram shows.

    Any of you with one installed.......can you give me a clear closeup pic or detailed description of how it's really supposed to fit in there? Or what modification to use?

    Update.......the fairing bracket is now installed. Here's how I did it:

    1. Drilled an additional two 3/8 inch holes in the top mount, after lots of careful measuring. Sprayed any bare metal black again.

    2. Drilled out the horn mounting welded-on nuts.

    3. Slightly re-contoured the shape of the top mount. Ran two longer bolts through the original mount holes and through the horn mount nuts, and installed washers and nuts. Now the mount is held in place by the two bolts and the tongue that sticks up behind the steering stem.

    4. Enlarged the two holes in the fairing mount crossmember to 3/8". Ran two long bolts through the holes.

    5. The fairing mount stays about 3/4" in front of the top mount, otherwise the lower bracket sides contact the valve cover. So, two bronze bushings go on the bolts, the bolts extend through the two new holes in the top mount, washers and lockwasher/nuts installed.

    Done now, and all is well. Next step is to figure a way to re-install the crashbar and auxiliary footpegs.
