What is the largest size front tire (fattest tire) that can safely be put on a 1980 XJ650G?

The size they list in the manual, 3.25 or 3.50 X 19 for the 1.85 X 19 rim or 100/90-19 as they are now called. If you try a larger one it will probably rub the fender and will screw up the handling by making turning slower and is likely to wobble.

Okay... So why would it cause a wobble? Assuming the tire is balanced and aligned with the rear is there any reason it should wobble?

    Assume nothing.

I just had a new front tire balanced and I'll be taking it back to them for a re-balance as I have a shimmy starting at around 82mph.

Anybody a fan of them Dyna beads ?

A wider tire will make it more LIKELY to wobble since it was designed for a narrower tire. I don't know why for sure but I tried it once and it did wobble. Actually anything that throws off either the front or rear balance will make it wobble. My big heavy XS1100 uses only a 100/90-19 tire so that should be more than enough for just a 650.

Don't make me and AZ get into another arguement about those.

I have them in my tires with no other weights. And the bike rides more smooth than ever before.

How much does Dyna Beads cost?

And then, ... what do they do?

Offer an explanation of how the product works and why they (would or are) superior to conventional wheel weights which don't move from their placement spot once affixed to the wheel.

just go to their website and read about them.

But for the quick and easy... They align themselves around the tire during rotation. For reasons that only Physics can explain, they group around the areas that require extra weight to aid in balancing the rotating tire. So, basically, it balances itself while you ride. Those Dyna beads sound like they are smarter than the average bike owner, or wink anyway. Don't they magically balance your tires while they suck money out of your wallet too?
Hey, if you guys want to see something else really stupid go to U tube and search for "Hydrogen gas savers" or "HHO", there are lots of idiots who think they got double the mileage on their cars using hydrogen they generated from a Mason jar! What's even more funny is if you search for videos on magnetic motors you can find other idiots who claim they have a motor that runs on NO power!
The funny thing is lots of them use 2 batteries! LOL

There's nothing magical about it. A tire bounces and wobbles when it's out of balance. What causes an imbalance? one part of the tire weighing different then the rest.

Take a simple electric motor and attach a blade to it. When you turn on the motor it spins and wobbles and is generally uncontrollable. Now take a second blade and attach it loosely to the motor so that it spins almost freely. Now turn the motor on and see what happens. The whole contraption will bounce and shake for second until the second blade spins around and counter balances the first blade. Then the whole thing spins smoothly. The same concepts work for tires.

Anyone who thinks that little beads know where to go and can magically balance a tire is a fool and like they say, there is one born every minute.

i have a bag of them right in front of me, cost 10$/2oz for 2 tires
unfortunately i don't have anything to use them on right now
looks like there are 4 opinions about them
    1 never heard of them
2 know what they are, never tried them
3 tried them, worked, use them all the time
4 junk, for fools, never tried them

but i never hear "tried them and they don't work"

Like I said, it's not magic, it's physics. They don't have to"know" anything. They don't seek out the spot that creates a balance. They bounce about inside the tire (so to speak) bacause of the vibrations cause by an imbalanced spinning mass. It's when they land in the spot that's the cause of the imbalance the wieght of the ball balance the tire out and centripetal force keeps it there until the tire stops spinning.

We're going to have send this to "Myth Busters" and have them run a test on them.

Just because you can repeat a lot of nonsense like that doesn't make it true!
Do you also play the lottery, visit psychics and use homeopathic medicine?

As a matter of fact, no I don't play the lottery, visits psychics or believe Jerry Springer is real.

Just because you can't grasp the very simple physical properties involved that make it work doesn't mean it's snake oil.

Magnetic cuffs that "reorganzie" hydro carbons to burn better is a scam because hyrdo carbons aren't magentic.

vortex throttle body spacers are a scam because by the time the air reaches the fuel it's been diverted so many timest that the "vortex" is destroyed. However, Chevrolet uses the same technique in their Vortec engines, they just do it at the head rather than the intake.

Bring up some other scams and I'll tell you why they don't work. But the basic principle behind a imbalanced spinning mass with another loose mass inside is subject to the laws of physics.

    Only in your world!
Actually if there were loose beads in there they would just bounce around harmlessly and do nothing unless you had a bulge in the tire causing one part to stick out farther then the rest of the tire then centrifugal force would probably cause them to stay in the bulging part most of the time which would actually throw the tire more out of balance and of course when you stopped they would just drop to the bottom. You could do the same thing by putting sand inside the tire but I wouldn't recommend that either.

    Yep.
I looked it up in my old college Physics Book.

Centripetal Force would cause the beads to collect anywhere there was an imperfection to the Gyro force. That the Inside Diameter of the rotating tire is spinning would cause and "Load" to see the surface where the Gyro force is out of balance.

Just like the Washing Machine adjusts itself to spin and unbalanced load.
Once the beads are in motion on a fast spinning inner diameter, Centripetal Force will make them collect at the point where there is an imbalance.

    Nice product.
    I wonder who thunk-it-up?
