Had my parts bike sitting here with no rear fender, so I figured I'd throw a seat and tank on there and see what it looks like. What do you guys think? I think it gives it a very sportbike-ish look, which I guess could be good or bad depending on what look you're going for. Wouldn't be too hard to mount a brake light in there. I don't know, I'll have to look at it for a while longer and see what I think... :D

Charming! I like the appearance. I'd loose the aluminum grab bar on mine if I could.

I was thinking the same thing about rainy days, but the sport bike guys get rid of the undertail fenders all the time.

I also tried it without the grab bar, and it seemed too unfinished. I also have a Seca tail fairing sitting here, but it doesn't match up well with the Maxim seat, and the mounting holes are totally different...

The sport bike guys who chop their fenders either don't ride in the rain or don't care about getting wet... there are probably more sport bike fair weather riders than harley fair weather riders...

I personally don't care about getting wet... :)

LOL, unfortunately not all of us are blessed with such a dry climate! :D

But, here in NC the fall and spring are usually pretty dry, but summer thunderstorms tend to come out of nowhere. I might play around a bit with a shortened fender, because I really do like this look...

I'm on the verge of transforming my dusty '81 Maxim (been sitting for about 5 years) into a neo-cafe racer. One of the things I want to do to it, is give it a solo seat. Not wanting to spend too much money, I'll probably cut the stock seat pan in half and modify the padding and cover. I was planning on cutting the subframe just behind the shocks, welding a cross-piece to brace it, relocating the seat latch, and adding an LED cluster under the back of the seat as the taillight/signals. I was wondering how far out that would push the rear wheel, and now seeing that photo with just the fender removed, it looks like the rider would get soaked just going through a puddle (nevermind riding in the rain). I think I'll have to come up with some kind of fender attached to a hugger on the rear wheel. Should be a fun project, though.

I'll have to post up a couple more pics of ideas I've had. I've got an '82 Seca rear fairing that would look pretty good moved forward a bit, with a custom solo seat. Only thing is I'll have to figure out a way to latch the rear of the seat, since doing this would get rid of the stock latch. I'll try to snap a couple pics later today. Bravo12, that's kind of the same look I'm going for.
