I finally got around to takeing the final drive off today to grease the splines. While I had it off I decided to drain it and put in fresh oil. When i took out the drain plug it had a pile of grease on top of it. Should the final drive have grease inside of it or do I need to take it apart and clean the grease out?

    Thanks, Mitch

I haven't changed mine since last season, but I think that might be a magnetic tip on the plug which collects fine metal particles that might seem like a pile of grease? If so, then it's OK just change the gear oil.

pbjman is correct, the drain plug is magnetic and the build up on it can be grease like.

Did oil drain out? If not then it is possible someone tried to pack it with grease. I wouldn't disassemble it though. Fill with Automatic Transmission and run it in gear on the center stand for a few minutes. Do that a couple times and it should get the grease out. Then fill with gear lube. I'd do the next change on a short interval.
