:!: I finally figured out the choke mystery on my slowly reviving XJ900. The 900 has a plastic ring on the left handlebar, right next to the Horn/high beam box. You turn the ring toward you and that pulls the choke cable in and pulls open the choke rod on the carbs. For ages I couldn't get it to work. I would pull on the ring but it wouldn't hold the choke rod and it would just slide back to the closed position. Turns out the ring was on the bike backwards. (THANKS P.O.!) I turned it around and it finally fit right. Now when I pull the ring toward me, it clicks in stages, holding the choke rod open in four different positions. There are two protruding tabs on the handlebar choke ring. Make sure the larger tab is at the 12 o'clock position when the choke is fully closed. That will put the smaller tab at about the 7 o'clock position. All this is when you're standing and facing the bike from the clutch lever side. If anyone's having similar troubles and needs more guidance, let me know.

Who would have thought that it was something as simple as that! I would have looked for months for something else to be the culprit!

My XJ900 has the same set up on the left handlebar...but has only got 2 click stops. The first is what I use on summer mornings and the other - full enrichment - is the winter option.

I took it apart one time and cleaned and lubricated the mechanism. I can see how it COULD be put back on incorrectly but I reckon the previous owner musthave been half asleep whjen doing it. It can be done but looks and feels wrong.

Well done. As always, it's usually the simple things that bug us until we sort them out.

A post script...not all XJ's have that choke lever on the handlebar. Most I believe have the mechanisms right down at carb level.

Well, my XJ650 maxim has the choke lever on the handlebar but it's the standard kind that moves in a horizontal half cricle type of motion.
You know, I got so confounded by the choke issue on the 900 that for a while I was thinking of tossing the thing a fabricating some kind of device that would work down by the carbs. Luckily, I had the handlebar choke ring off to see if there was something wrong with it and realized the problem. But then again, this is the same bike that came without an exhaust valve shim in the #4 cylinder. Scary, huh? I was lucky there too since I changed and/or checked the oil, filters, plugs, shims, gas and battery before firing it up for the first time. They do say God protect lunatics and little children...
