Seca 750.... Now have three used heads all have some scoring of the cam bearing surfaces. wondering if it is even possible to find one without some scoring/wear. Seems to me that the top of the engine being the first vulnerable point of oil starvation would be designed with a replaceable wear surface for the camshaft. Dont ever buy a used head from a picture especially one with the caps in place. No matter how clean it looks or what the seller states.

I thought the cam floats on a cushion of oil and only bad scoring was a problem. What oil do you recommend? Additives? Any pix of the good, the bad ?

I would be surprised if there are any that don't have some scoring. That aluminum is mighty soft and anything that gets up there is bound to score them.

I'm with sgary, some scoring shouldn't be a problem. Slap some plastigauge in there and see if the are out of spec.

couldnt a good metals shop weld in some material and remachine, it might be a touch pricey, but if you can save the head, and possibly make it stronger with the harder weld material it might be worth it.

The Japanese seem to feel that cams run just fine directly in the head. Honda does it with their cars, too. I agree with Carl, any used one is bound to have SOME scoring; as long as it's not deep or horribly bad, gauge it and see what you've got. I'd use the "prettiest" one if it checks ok clearance-wise.

it may not be as pricey as you thought. i would check into that if you continue to have trouble finding a head.
