I recently got this 1982 maxim on marketplace, brought it home got to looking at it, everything i have to put it together is here, mostly already on the bike or in a box, i have the full manual. The problems that were explained to me were the air box being rough(the filter needs blown out, seems usable) , and the bike running a little rich. I figure tuning the carb may solve the issue but i have decided to clean everything up and assemble it properly before starting it and beginning any tuning. I know these bikes are work and take a type of niche knowledge and special love but i am prepared for this. Any help would be appreciated as soon as i know what i am dealing with.

Here are a few checks to get you started. Safety first....

    1) Check valve clearances before doing any engine/carb work...it can be the root of all evil ;). Valves on these bikes actually tighten as they wear, and so can get to the point they cause damage.
    2) Check rear brake shoes for delamination. Safety issue. Check front brake lines, if old, replace (safety issue).
    3) Check tires, if much more than 5 years ago, consider replacing as they may be dry rotting (safety issue)

Once you have done the above, you may want to check the resistance on the spark plug caps and coil operation for proper spark. They are resistive spark plug caps, and over time on of mine on my '83 went way out of speck, causing poor spark/ignition.

There are a lot of great "how to guides" on this site for these checks/adjustments, and XJ4Ever is the best, most reliable source of parts (see icon on top right of website).

    Enjoy.

Would it be irresponsible to replace the fluids and simply see if it will run without messing with much of anything?

If the gas tank has no rust, I wouldn't be able to resist trying it, but that's me. Even if it will start, everything on the above list needs to be done. If not, it might help you know if there are other electrical or starter problems and where further checks need to be done. After that, carbs will be the project.

the reason the bike is running rich, could well be the air filter, i would get a new one , change the oil and filter, and give it a try with a dummy tank
