Having trouble getting her started and wondered if this could be part of the problem. The choke doesn't stay open and you have to keep yours fingers on it keeping it pulled all the way out. Remember cleaning the carbs a while back and it was working then, have i missed something putting it back together. Can't remember if there is a small ball bearing that goes on the choke pin or not? so when you pull it out it stays out.

    Hi,
Looked at a few FJ600 pictures on the googlenet and it kinda looks like mikuni cv carbs.
Odds are the fuel enrichment circuit cable (choke) is lacking some sort of friction at the actual lever.
On the XJ it is held in place at that level from the lever and nothing to do with the carbs.
    Hope this helps.

There should be a wave washer in the choke lever assembly. If that is missing then it won't hold the enrichment plungers open. It's also possible that the screw that holds the assembly together is just loose (use a JIS screwdriver).

Thanks for the replies my mistake I have the 85 engine in the frame with the later mikuni carbs fitted with the choke lever on the left side of the carbs. Not the earlier type with the cable running from the carb to the left hand switch gear. I think your right kmoe it could be missing the wave washer we're is it mounted on the carb and we're can you get one? Included some photos of my carb.

You can get a wave washer at any good hardware store. They are nothing special.

I don't think that choke assembly uses one though.

thats right , no wave washer that i know of -----bbuutt-----
look at carbs 2 and 3 , just at the back of the pilot screw , where the choke rod goes through the carb casing, there are is a hole on the 2 and 3 carb, there underneath the rod ,is a spring and ball bearing, that locates in a dimple in the rod, its likely you lost them if you took the rod out, or at least lost the ball bearing , they are tiny, and you wont find them on any part fiche , you may still have the springs in place , maybe you can match up the balls .
i'll see if i can find the picture of them in my cafe racer build ,some years ago.

what I found ,was that where the enrichment shaft slides through each carb, on #2 and#3 carbs, there is a tiny spring and ball ,that locates in a notch on the enrichment shaft ,to keep it in position, very lucky I found these

did you remove the rod to check, the springs and balls should be underneath the rod, thats tough if they're missing ,:mad:o_O

Yeah the rods out no bearings or springs. I remember cleaning the carbs 5 or 6 years ago and removed the rod and remembered a tiny bearing falling out now but never thought nothing of it, I've probably misplaced it somewhere never find it now. Only when I came to putting the bike back together last year I noticed it. Like you said there's nothing on the microfiche parts or diagrams in the Haynes that states its there or can be bought as a part number.

cant see why they would'nt work, balls seem to be about 3mm dia, and springs the same od, about 9mm long, but you can always cut them to length
