The Clymer I have is absolutely useless on this subject. They say you should set the float height, don't tell you how high, and illustrate it with a black and white picture the size of a matchbook that is so blurry you only see a hand above a carb-shaped blob.

I put in new float needles. Anybody know the dry height? I'd like to get a reasonable starting point before engaging in the wet-setting circus performance.

what are the carbs? hitachi or mikuni? I believe that somewhere around 17mm is a good starting point for most of the carbs we play with. measured from the float bowl flange to the bottom of the float.

Do you have the mikuni BS32 carbs? If so, iirc it's the same as on the xj550's (21.5mm dry height). Other companies bikes that have these carbs, though, often specified 22.4mm for their dry height...... Fwiw

I believe mama-yama stopped stating a number for these and it went to a wet-height-only setting of 3mm +/- 1mm

They are Mikuni BS series, but I think they are larger than the 550 carbs.

The wet-setting procedure in the Clymer is insane. They say it needs to be done ON THE BIKE. And you should level the bike with shims under the centerstand, and run it for a while.

I will not believe in a million years that whoever wrote that actually tried it. I'd like some of what they were smoking, though. Had to be good stuff.

They are larger than the 550 carbs. Maybe 33? 34? All I can find on the carbs themselves is "Mikuni Corporation".

    550's are bs28 The 600's are bs32's. I think.

Ok yes, upon re-reading some stuff-- the 550's all had the bs28 EXCEPT for the 1984 550 ( the "oddball" that was apparently only available to the UK), which did have the BS32.

The BS28's are the one that yamaha used to state a dry setting of 21.5mm

The US/rest of the world 550 differences are odd. Like, say, the fact that the single-caliper US-spec fork is a completely different assembly from the OUS dual-disc setup. You'd think the right side leg and caliper would be the same, but they are not.

So, any idea on what the BS32 float setting would be?

I'm pretty sure I set my 32s to 21mm after watching a you tube video - just got around to fitting them into the bike today now that we've had a sunny spell here (warmed up rubbers). Mine will be feeding a Radian 600 engine.
Interesting that the originals on my 84 550 are 28s though ! Perhaps it's still an 83 model year..

    Cheers

    My 550 is also 28s.

I am fairly certain Radian and FJ600 are the same engine.
