hey guys, I've been seeing float height settings for carbs and now I need to put one into play. the model carb I have for my 72 CB350 twin is a 3D, stamped on the side, and the setting is 26mm.

can someone tell me where to take these measurements? Thanks

omg is that the same EXACT carb I'm working on??? but that looks like a vacume nipple in the upper left most part of the carb.

    Thanks though MiCarl

oh wait, sorry, so that measurement is taken just as the float twang is making contact with the needle valve center spring or when the needle valve spring thingy is compressed?

There is only one way to set float heights & that is wet, with fuel.

The spring should not be compressed. That is the reason the carburetor is not completely inverted (picture is vertical plane, not flat). Having the body inclined prevents the weight of the float from depressing the plunger.

Other than the facts that Honda never listed a fuel level spec and there are no drains in the bowls that is a great idea!

Its true, no fuel spec, no nipple or secondary drain hole to attach a tube.

So what if I told you the float height is spot on and already precise, new needles installed and the carbs overflow with the petcock On?

I'd say remove bowl, invert, wet everything with soapy water and blow into the fuel line. Where are the bubbles?

No bubbles? Float probably sinking. Doesn't that have a soldered brass float? Could have a leak in it. Can you hear fuel sloshing in it?

All this assumes it's assembled correctly and the float pivots freely on the shaft.

holy crap one of them has fuel in it sloshing around when I shake it, holy crap.

    yes they're brass

Although there isn't very much in there (i cant imagine weighing enough to submerge it more than 1mm) but they've been apart for a week so maybe some evaporated?

thanks a million MiCarl, thanks a million

Brass? The floats on Hitachi carbs (XJ650RJ Seca) aren't brass!! They're some type of molded, solid foam type material, they won't absorb fuel......

I had that issue on my 250 kawa. Was only a little so I tried a quick fix with some sealant. It didn't hold. When I pulled it out the float was full up. Ordered a new float on April 2nd from a company online. Finally shipped out today. It didn't bother me that it took so long, but I e-mailed them three times in the last 2 weeks just to get some sort of update and never heard a thing.

    Good luck with yours.
