This is a good photo Rex took of his carbs. It shows the correct level and most importantly on the float bowls you will see the drain nipple. Attach a section of clear tubing to the nipple and open the drain screw. With the tubing straight and against the carb body you want the fuel level at the green arrow + or - 1mm. If you have Mikuni carbs then the tubing will go into the nipple instead of over it. The drain screws are very likely stuck. A tap with a hand held impact driver will soosen them. If the carbs are off the bike then remove the bowls with the stuck screw and heat it with a cigarette lighter. This should loosen them.

was wondering how do you adjust the height of the floats if you find the level is low? can you do this with the carbs on the bike? and if i understand it correctly you place a clear piece of tube on the nipple and bend it upwards beside the carb and then crack the screw and this will tell you were the float height is?? thanks.

You can adjust the float height by gently bending the float valve needle tang. This is best accomplished with the carb bank off of the machine. You could do it on the machine but you would have to pull them off to open up the fuel bowls so why bother doing the process twice? You understand correctly about the tube usage, be sure to have the fuel free flowing (pri if on the bike).

    Hi.

I think it's 16mm + or - 1mm from the surface the gasket sits on to the top of the float.

Check the Float Level's on both No-1 and No-4. You're and odds-on favorite to find that one or both are right on-the-money.

If they're BOTH within the mid-points of the castings that form the mating surfaces for the bowl and the carb body; that's an acceptable variation. They'll open and close damn-near simultaneously within those specs.

Now, when you pull the rack to set the float levels; you may set them all to within those specs; or get down-right precise right across-the-board.

You can "Measure" -- or, you can "Sight" ... either way, the carbs need to be level.
    ...................

Make-up a half-dozen rulers by marking the Tang Height on a toothpick of the carb that showed the best height. Run the toothpick down past the side of the Tang until it bottoms on the carb body. Mark the toothpick with the point of a well sharpened pencil.

Square-up the tips of some extra toothpick and mark them at the same level of the one used to get the measurement. (You have fresh ones if the original's tip gets squashed or it breaks.

Using your marked measurement of the ideal height on the other three carbs; adjust the tangs to be at the same mark as the correct one.
The special tool isn't special at all. The head of a nail will both push a tang down ... or, catch the lip and let you pull it up.
    ....................

Sighting them is as implied. Look right down the line of tangs and just tweak them to be all at the level of the correct one.

Either way, they should all be at the same level when you have finished setting the floats.

Don't over-tweak the tangs striving for absolute perfection. You don't know if they have been tweaked before and do not want to break-off a float tang. ( +/- a Millimeter is OK).
