I just bought a 1982 Xj 650 rj Seca and I was wondering if you can add a mechanical oil pressure gauge and if so where can you tap into the engine to connect it. Thanks.

eh.? xj's have no oil pump!.?
    don't understand your statement.
the high pressure take off is available at the large allen cap screw at the bottom of the engine on either side

the one here under the "Yamaha" cover.
I believe some engines have another takeoff from a 8mm bolt on the cylinder head.
someone more familiar to your engine may know exactly where

Taking the pressure at the head will give a "false low" reading.

Just be careful with that. You've tapped into the end of the main crank oil gallery; a leak there could quickly destroy the motor.

As for the presence of an oil pump: Yes, the XJs have an oil pump. In the 550/600s, it is gear driven; in the shafties it is chain driven. It's located behind the clutch in both series.

Well to rub it in a little, most two strokes have an oil pump, too. Otherwise one would have to mix oil and gas like a caveman.

not many chainsaws where you are?

or weed eaters, leaf blowers , motocross bikes, oil injected snowmobiles (okay bad example), two stroke quads , ect..

Well, yes I love my two-cycle lawn tools, however this is a motorcycle forum so I figured the discussion would stay in that realm. However you are correct about the motocross bikes, most of my two stroke experience has been with 70's bikes from Yamaha and Kawasaki all of which have oil pumps.

Thanks for your replies. Just thought the it might be like Small Block Chev where you can just screw the Oil Pressure gauge in where the Oil Light sensor taps in.
