What is the best way to clean rust off the screw cap and Oil Seal Retaining Clips grove? I am rebuilding my first set of forks and they need to be touched up.

Are they already apart, or do you need to free up rusted-in-place parts?

I have everything apart. One air valve didn't have an o ring so there is a little surface rust.

Just polish it off with Scotchbrite.

Thanks Fitz. The scotchbrite worked like a charm. What is the best way to clean the tubes out? I see that people are suggesting to flush it with fork oil but that seems a little costly. Can I use something else like brake cleaner or motor oil?
