I can't find any sort of size for the cotter pin in the front and rear axle that keeps the nut secure. Does anyone have an idea as to the size?

    Thanx!

There isn't a size per se. It needs to be a close fit to the hole and long enough to bend the ears over.

Go to the hardware or auto parts store and get an assortment.

Some (non Chain ) type Hardware store carry a selection .. (they buy one of those $9 Cotter pin assortment cases) They will sell you a pin for a few cents.

I bought a set of assorted pins for a few bucks ($2 or $3) and kept them with my bike. Nice addition to any tool bag.

You can get a package of six at Home Depot.
I'm not sure what size they are.
Bring the old one and match it up.

    $1.79 for all six.
Use two and put the other four on eBay as Original Equipment and charge 5-Bucks each with free shipping.

Speaking of cotter pins... A friend of mine bought one of those Baja import bikes from Joes (formerly GI Joes). When he got it home, he was going over the bike and discovered that the guy who had assembled it hadn't put the cotter pins in the front or rear axles (among other mistakes). He called the store and told them about it and how serious a mistake this could have been. He later discovered that the mechanic was let go. My friend starts Monday with that particular store. Guess what he's going to be doing for them? ...Give up? He's assembling these bikes for them.

Hey if you like cheese there's no better place :) mmm fresh cheese curds!!

Luckily Stratford is 15 minutes away and has everything but a Walmart, which is weird in itself haha.

Mmmm... It's almost like a little scream of agony as you bite into it. To say nothing of pouring hot gravy over the tasty little beasts...

    Oh yeah!! Cotter pins!

Would there happen to be a Princess Auto in Stratford? If there is, you'll find all kinds of great tools and such there. They even have some good cotter pin packages and I'd also recommend picking up their assorted o-ring pakage. And maybe some shrink tubing. Umm... And some tire levers. They also usually have torque wrenches on sale. Impact driver...

Oh yeah! And cotter pins! Don't forget the cotter pins!

Hey KrS14, head to Canadian Tire. They have cotters you can buy in bulk. All I did was pick up three or four each of a variety of sizes, cost about $4. Now I have pins for every occasion, bike related or not. You find out the right sizes, can easily buy more and the others can be used on lawn mowers, etc.

The advantage of cotters over nails (and I have used nails in a pinch) is that cotters can be had in stainless - no rust and easier to remove.

Cotter pins, o-rings, i got the rubber stoppers for my homemade carb sync tool there too. It's like heaven hahah.
