I'm having a hard time removing the plastic cover to start replacing my '85 Maxim's front brake pads. Any help is appreciated!

As was pointed out in a response to your other post, you're going to need to do more than just change the brake pads.

You need to rebuild the caliper(s) and master cylinder and replace the original brake lines.

The original lines were to have lasted 4 years; the caliper and master cylinder seals TWO years.

You can't just replace the pads in a 30-year old system; you're going to experience other issues with the brakes so you may just as well rebuild them now.

If your talking about the plastic piece on the bottom of the caliper held in by one screw... I had a little trouble with mine. So I sprayed a little PB blaster (a lub) and then one of these...

Carefully so I didn't brake anything. Once I got it to crack. It came right off.

    Hope this helps.

He has an '85 (or '86 made in '85) Maxim of some variety.

Their brake calipers are different from ours. Our black plastic covers are held on by one screw.

Truth be told, I tried to help. I looked in the fiche at both the '85 and '86 Maxim AND Maxim "X" and none of them have any sort of black plastic cover like the earlier XJs do (other XJs have similar but different covers.)

I suspect a mis-identified bike or a front end swap. OP needs to provide more info. Or pictures.

I just rebuilt the calipers on my 85 maxim and you have to squeeze the sides of it together carefully and then it pulls straight out.
