I've noticed (by watching my neutral light dim) that my brake light does not come on until I get a SOLID handful of the front brake lever. The back brake come on pretty quickly. Is there any way to adjust when the front brake lever activates the light?

No the front switch is not adjustable. It can be removed by pushing the pin in with a screwdriver then the unit can be removed.

The rear brake switch is threaded with a nylon adjuster housing/nut. Screw the nut up or down to suit your preference.
Eblo, perhaps you could shim your switch. Real pain by the looks of it but it might be your only option.

By looking at some diagrams the 81 XJ750 mastercylinder looks a bit different than what I have on my 80 XJ650. But, if the switch is in the same place activated by the brake lever lifting off of it, maybe adjust the brake lever's screw that pushes the piston in the master cylinder out a bit, which will move your lever off of the switch a bit before you actually have a hand full of brake.

Or maybe wrong brake lever for the master cylinder ?

Pop-off the pedal-end of the Brake Switch pull-down rod.
Squeeze the Wing-Tabs on the Adjustment Ring and withdraw the switch.
    Screw-off the adjuster.
Clean threads and lube with synthetic waterproof grease.
De-burr the inside diameter of the Adjustment Ring frame mount.
Increase Mount Inside Diameter 1-1.25 mm after "squaring-up" mount halves.
    Install - hook-up switch.

Adjust the switch to your liking!

RickCoMatic - are those instructions for me, with the front brake, or m0pp3ry who asked about the rear? Either way, it reads like foreign language to me. :D

I guess maybe I'll just be sure to sue both brakes at the same time ;)

    That's the Rear Brake.

Nasty little thing to try to adjust when its hot and humid.

The quote I posted above was straight from the manual. The front is not adjustable. Take the unit out and have a good look you might be able to "fix" it. I'd guess the pin is worn or broken, maybe the lever is worn where the pin rubs on it. Probably easier to just get another unit and/or lever.

You should use both breaks at the same time anyway! It's all about balance and control.

    Ride safe.

i have a master cylinder that has a bent brake handle. i bought it on ebay for the master cylinder but as it turns out i cant use it. i have 82 750 maxim and have the brake sensor and this one does not. but it has the wire harness going to the brake light. if you want it. i'll give it to ya.... it passes continuity when you barely activate the brake but thats all i know.
