Front Brake pad question

    Can someone explain to me why my brake pads in the front wear like this:

    instead of : ||
    which is what I'd expect.. Is there some adjustment I'm missing?

    ? ? not sure what condition you talking about here...

    pads worn more at the leading edge? ie: front of the pad, or do you mean the wear pattern is more left to right ? ?

    Make sure that your brake CALIPER can pivot easily and smoothly on its mounting bolt and sleeve (that attaches the caliper to the fork tube). The 650 Maxim used a really goofy pivoting (rather than "floating") caliper system, and if the caliper locks itself into a fixed position (angled left or right in relation to the disc rotor), then you'll get brake squeal, lots of uneven pad wear, brakes dragging, etc. Make sure that the pivot bolt, the pivot bolt sleeve, and the inside bore of the caliper (where the pivot sleeve fits into) are all smooth, not scarred or binding, and lube it gently with graphite and grease to insure that it pivots freely....and don't over-torque the pivot bolt, either!

    Ahpook, I have purchased pads for my 81 650 Max with the angle present new. Characteristic of the design. Just remember this when you regularly inspect them.

    Robert is correct: They don't wear that way, they were made that way.

    I replaced a set of perfectly good pads when I first got my 650 :D .

    +1 to Robert & MiCarl -- the pads come like that. I guess because of the design it works better -- I don't pretend to understand it either, but it's normal

    I guess you're right. These are new pads, maybe 15 miles on them, and I noticed they were not the same thickness all the way around...must just be characteristic of the bike...thanks...

    one other thing: there's two springs in the caliper according to the manual, the
    H shaped one, and then the other one. I cannot for the life of me figure out
    where that one goes! The H shaped one is no problem, but the other one?

    I'm stuck..

    The round spring to hold the piston boot on?

    XJ 650 G,H,LH and J Is yours a leading axle fork ? or the regular type ?

    my manual shows 2 types, you can see a couple pics from my manual at the links below:

    XJ650 Maxims use a "leading axle" type of fork.

    XJ650RJ Seca models use a "bottom axle" type of fork design.
