Have you rebuilt the master cylinder yet ?
I have one now that I just verified it's not letting enough fluid come back and keeps pressure on the fornt brakes. I loosened the brake line at the MC and brakes released. Got a kit on Order for it.

Yea, I flushed the one out on my 77 XS750 as well and made sure all the ports were open but it still hangs. Before you tear into the calipers, Pick up the front end and spin that wheel, hitting the brake hard while it spins, If it drags try loosening the line at the master cylinder and see if it relieves the pressure.

I already rebuild the rear master cylinder on the same bike as it was hanging as well. The rubber plunger was all deformed after sitting for years(27), even with brake fluid in it and the spring was all rusted, I suspect not strong enough to push it back far enough. It has 5,433 original miles on it, it's just the age of the rubber.
