My front caliper on my 83 xj550 has a lot of play in the pin the holes on the caliper it self seem to be oval and the pin isn't centered. I'm not sure if this is normal or how to fix it. I thought about drilling them out and putting bushings in but I don't want to weaken it too much.

Once the holes in the holding block or the caliper body are worn out oval the only thing you can really do is replace it. I've got one in the garage right now that's so worn out floppy as to be completely useless.

It's "normal" in regard to high mileage wear; the best thing to do is find a lower-mileage bike being parted out on eBay and snatch up the caliper assembly to rebuild.
