1982 XJ750 Maxim here. You guys have been really helpful and I've been riding her a lot after getting her in decent shape.

Tonight I was riding and looking at my front end silhouetted in the headlight beam and I realized it was not straight. Not at all. At least 5 degrees off. I slowly released the bars while at 40 mph on a level straightaway and the bike wanted to run off the road. Um.

There's the possibility that something happened to the bike recently, but it's just as likely it has ALWAYS been like this but I've been subconsciously compensating the entire time and I'm just becoming aware of it. I first really noticed it last week when I gave my girlfriend a ride but I thought that was her fault for leaning without realizing it.

I'm going to try to get some pictures when it is light. The front fender was never exactly aligned with the front wheel but I always thought it was because it was bent, not the wheel alignment. I took a really good look tonight and the fender is perfect, the wheel is slanted in between the forks.

I'm really confused, since I don't understand how the brake calipers fit properly with the wheel slanted - again, the fender looks to be centered between but the wheel is offset and at a slanted angle.

I've checked the manual and it doesn't appear I put it back together out of order or with any parts missing. There's no play in the wheel. I'm really confused.

Lower 48 in general. Otherwise Central Mitten.
This could be one of several different problems,
Parts installed incorrectly when rebuilt. (Springs/spacers installed upside down, or not seated properly)
Fork Tubes not aligned in the triple tree.
Steering head bearings worn out causing misalinment of the triple tree.
    Possible bent fork tube.
Unequal air pressure in the tubes.

5 degrees from wheel center to outer rim edge would be well over 1/4 inch. It would seem that this would surely cause brake binding.
