Std recomended pressure on my 750 (XJ900 frame) is 5.7psi max is 17.1psi, I run mine on about 9psi. Manual says NEVER EXCEED the MAX or oil seal damage may occure.

The correct amount will depend on your preference, and how much total weight (bike, rider, passenger, and gear) you have. The additional air pressure is acting as additional spring preload. As z32800 stated, never exceed max pressure. Personally I run without any additional air pressure unless I have a passenger.

And the safest way to load the pressure is to fill a portable tank to the desired pressure, and then fill the bike.

Almost. The safest way is to use a hand pump with a built in pressure gauge.

And you can carry it with you on a trip. I keep a collapsable bicycle pump in my tool tube.

I find my 750 runs good with a little more pressure. I'm getting pretty heavy so mine drives good at 12-15lbs. I tried 10lbs but kept bottoming out over jumps. :)
