Does anyone have experience rebuilding the front end on these? I have a '83 XJ750 and have noticed that the speedo side is dry. After repacking the bearing it flung the grease all over. At closer inspection it looks like the boot around the speedo is not sealing anything. I am thinking that the front end needs rebuilt now, who knows how long that bearing has been run dry, the other side is a sealed bearing so I am not too concerned with that.

    Replacement bearings are fully shielded.
The original grease is 30 years old.
Replace the bearings just for peace of mind. Chacal sells the correct replacements. Start a converastion with him.

Take your speedo drive apart and clean and lube it so it doesn't lock up

What I have seen is that the speedo drive unit is driven off the bearing on the left side with a key to the inner race. Is this suppose to be one assembly or two parts? Mine is split and that is where it is throwing grease.

I think he's talking about the drive and the separate metal washer that seat in the hub. I could be wrong.
