How are you supposed to remove the front wheel bearings if they're both in bottomed counterbores? Hitting the outer ring of the bearing only forces it into the counterbore more and doesn't push out the other side?

If the front wheel bearings on the 550's are the same as the 650's...Then I used a scribe to pull the dust cap out of each side, then I used a long drift through the axle tube and in a circular pattern slowly persuaded the roller bearings out.

I'd be fairly careful doing it though, the first time I did it i really rocked the shit out of the bearings, but if you use finesse then it works well.

Alasskazzr is basically right in his description of how to remove the bearings.
    >:*)

HOWEVER, why be so protective in removing them? If theyre coming out for any reason you have to suspect they are faulty some how, (otherwise why bother?), and since bearings are cheap why not just insert new bearings anyway???

I had already taken them out once. And, like you stated didn't much care if I damaged them in the process. But, after installing new ones I didn't feel like they were in correctly. Maybe the sleeve between them isn't the right length? Not sure. I ordered all the hub pieces from chacal so I know they're right and I'll try it again. And, I was just getting ready to start it, damn winters coming.

I you just think they are not in right all you need to do is use a large socket to seat them. The socket should fit the outside bearing race and also fit inside the wheel well. This allows the socket drive the bearing all the way in without binding on the wheel well. There should be no need to remove them. Removing them could damage them no matter how careful you are.
